Gulf South for Green New Deal

Gulf South for Green New Deal (GS4GND) is a multi-year, multi-state initiative anchored by GCCLP, which is facilitating the formation for three years with the goal of self-governance. This regional formation of organizations, networks, small businesses, and engaged residents of the Gulf South (TX, LA, MS, AL, FL, and Puerto Rico) addresses the climate crisis and its impacts on the region through the advancement of equity and justice along with the creation of millions of living wage, ecologically sustainable jobs. GS4GND connects long-existing work in the Gulf South towards climate, racial, and economic justice. GS4GND develops policy, advances civic engagement through regional campaigns, and organizes communities in the creation of a uniquely Gulf South version of a Green New Deal, centering the realities, power, and relevance of the region. GS4GND builds regional power to advance a uniquely southern, collective, frontline vision for a sustainable future that centers laborers, farmers, fisherfolk, tribal nations, and frontline communities in a just transition away from extractive economies that accelerate the global climate crisis. 

The Gulf South for a Green New Deal is a regional movement infrastructure built through regional convergences, strategic convenings, and innovative spaces for collective healing and reconciliation. GS4GND is advancing a policy platform across the Gulf South rooted in community leadership and vision and built over a six-month participatory process from the ground-up.

About the Position - GS4GND Regional Organizer

GCCLP is seeking applicants for a Regional Organizer position to help support the strategic vision and implementation of Gulf South for a Green New Deal across the five Gulf South states and Puerto Rico. Candidates who are committed to climate justice, frontline leadership, and building a movement for a more just and sustainable economy are encouraged to apply. The Regional Organizer will help move this platform forward into implementation while supporting the long-term vision of a self-sustained movement infrastructure that is governed by and accountable to community leadership. The role of Regional Organizer is not a decision-making leadership role for Gulf South for Green New Deal, but rather a facilitative leadership role supportive of collective decisions.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate information, communication, relationships, and processes to advance Gulf South for a Green New Deal Initiative.

  • Manage organizational and frontline relationships.

  • Set agendas and facilitate meetings and strategy sessions.

  • Build capacity and train leaders in facilitation processes to support self-governance.

  • Support the development and implementation of political education curricula.

  • Support on communications and narrative strategies.

  • Help co-create the infrastructure for a self-sustained and self-determined Gulf South for a Green New Deal.

  • Mediate and work to resolve conflicts at the community level.

 

Additional Information

The role is expected to last two years, with the goal of creating a self-sustaining movement of work. Regional Organizers currently report to the Executive Director and will ultimately report to the Organizing Lead. GCCLP currently has one GS4GND Regional Organizer and is seeking two more.

Schedule
  • This is a full-time, remote position. 

  • Significant travel is required when COVID allows safe travel and social interactions. GCCLP hosts in-person staff meetings up to four times a year and multiple convenings throughout the year. In addition, GS4GND Regional Organizers regularly visit GS4GND partners and frontline communities.

Compensation
  • This position is currently classified as an independent contractor. GCCLP is forming a 501(c)3 and will transition all consultants to employees in 2022.

  • The compensation is $50,000, plus a $400/month health care stipend.

About You

Qualifications & Experience

Ideal candidates will possess:  

  • 7–10 years of experience in grassroots organizing around climate justice, racial justice, and/or economic justice.

  • 5 years of experience in coalition building, alignment, and community network development.

  • Significant skills in using digital organizing platforms, including calendaring software, video conferencing and webinars, listservs, social media, and other similar tools for coordination and communication with distributed teams.

  • Knowledge of database management, surveying, and data analysis.

  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate skills across multiple perspectives and geographies,

  • Demonstrated ability to co-create inclusive and participatory processes of agenda-setting, meeting facilitation, and strategy development.

  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically as well as understand local nuances.

  • Demonstrated ability to create short- to long-term work planning processes.

  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a grassroots team.

  • Demonstrated ability to foster and cultivate membership. 

  • A deep commitment to supporting, amplifying, and following frontline leadership.

  • A deep commitment to fostering self-determined and governed work.

  • A deep understanding, knowledge, and experience in working in the Gulf South.

  • A dedication to self-governance and community autonomy.

  • Experience working effectively within communities of color and other frontline communities.

Human Resources Coordinator

Location: This is a remote position located anywhere in the US, with a preference for the U.S. South.

About the Position - Development Coordinator

GCCLP is seeking applicants for a Human Resources (HR) Coordinator position to help support the build-out and maintenance of our human resources function. Candidates who are committed to climate justice, frontline leadership, Black Liberation, and building a movement for a more just and sustainable economy are encouraged to apply. 

Key Duties & Responsibilities
  • Maintain personnel records in accordance with all applicable regulations.

  • Support recruitment process by preparing and posting job descriptions, tracking applications, communicating with applicants, scheduling and coordinating interviews, and working with hiring managers to ensure thorough onboarding.

  • Help develop onboarding processes and procedures.

  • Manage benefits enrollment and administration.

  • Practice extreme discretion in maintaining confidentiality.

  • Maintain professional and personal development needs and coordinate opportunities.

  • Manage HR budget.

  • Coordinate logistics of team supports including employee appreciation, team retreats, and healing and wellness practices. 

  • Monitor team morale and ensure internal culture is well attended to by the Executive Team, raising opportunities and concerns where appropriate.

  • 3-5 years of experience in the human resources field.

  • Knowledge and experience with some or most of the following functions: benefits administration, employment recruitment and selection, training and development, compensation, employee appraisal and assessment, and HR systems.

  • Demonstrated experience executing equitable hiring and staffing practices.

  • A strong commitment to developing and maintaining liberatory workplace culture.
